Toothpick Star Trick

This trick was submitted by several people but the explanation I'm using was sent in by Ryan. I'd like to thank Jason Freislinger and Jake Dorst for their submissions of the trick. Keep them coming folks. Here's what Ryan sent us. These are his words with some comments from me.

[This trick] requires a few more ingredients than most of the tricks you listed but it's easy enough to describe. In the spirit of your excellent site I want to share it here and you can do what you want with it.

I guess we should call it "water into the glass"

You'll need:

  •     A saucer with a little water in it
(I use cranberry juice just to make it a little easier to see.)
  •     A lemon wedge
      (or lime, orange, etc.)
  •     A rocks glass
  •     Four matches

the challenge is to transfer the water from the saucer into the rocks glass without touching the saucer

Set up

This is done by putting the four matches into the lemon wedge; placing it peel down into the saucer; lighting the matches at once; while they're still burning place the rocks glass over the burning lemon, flat into the saucer, where the lack of air will cause a vacuum that lifts the water into the rocks glass. If you do this quickly, and correctly, you can flip the rocks glass open side up but with all of the water from the saucer.

(I do it without flipping the saucer over. I find it's impressive enough watching the water being sucked into the glass. I've done it both ways and people seem to be impressed enough after the water is sucked into the glass and don't care about flipping it over.)

(Some people do this trick with a stack of quarters instead of a lime wedge.  Anything you can use to hold the match will work)

I suppose this is a little elaborate but I do it frequently and it drives people NUTS. You simply have to practice it before trying it in public. I don't think I have to warn you how bad an amateur looks in a bar room setting. (or in any other setting)

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
